Tabular Text Editor - Quick Start
The Main Window
The main window is shown below.

Getting Started
The Tabular Text Editor does exactly what the name implies, with a
little filtering and summarizing thrown in for good measure. The
application is relatively simple, so there are no unexpected features,
and as a result everything works as logically expected.
|
Start the application |
Double click the desktop icon or double click an associated file
in Windows Explorer. All functions can be accessed from the main
menu, and most common functions from the toolbar, both of which
are in area 1. |
|
Open/import a file |
Data can find its way into the Tabular data edits in one of
three ways:
- Opening a file from the "File/Open" menu.
- Create an empty file from the "File/New" menu.
- Import data into an existing document from the
"File/Import" menu.
|
|
Edit columns |
Columns can be added and removed, and the names and data types
changed from the menu "Edit/Columns". Changing the data type is
particularly import for filtering and sorting, for example with
dates. |
|
Edit data |
The data in cells (shown in area 2) can be edited directly, search/replaced and
filled among the other normal editing functions. |
|
Filter |
As many filtered views as required can be opened by using the
menu "Filter/New Filter", or right clicking a cell and choosing
"Filter/Add '<field name>' To" from the pop up menu. |
|
Summarize |
A summary of the current view can be opened from the
"View/Summary" menu as shown in area 3. The summary columns are automatically
chosen from the columns chosen in the summary. |
|
Save/Export |
After editing the document can be saved, or exported to Excel,
HTML or text. If any of the columns have different setting then
the additional information is saved in a separate .columns file. |
